DR. ANDREW M. HOUG, ORTHODONTICS CLASS OF 1960
Dr. Andrew Marc Houg died on Feb. 10, 2019. He was 86.
Dr. Houg was born on Aug. 16, 1932 in Osage, Iowa, to Monrad Arndt Karlin and Alphild Margaret Houg. He grew up in nearby St. Ansgar and excelled in football, baseball, and basketball. He still holds the scoring record for his hometown high school. He attended the University of Iowa on a Nile Kinnick Scholarship and played football, basketball, and baseball his freshman year. In the following years he focused on football. He became captain of the Hawkeyes football team in 1953 and was coached by Forrest Evashevski. They finished in third place in the Big Ten that year. He graduated from the University of Iowa Dental School in 1956, where he was president of his dental fraternity, and then served as a captain in the U.S. Dental Corp. He married his sweetheart, Colleen Alexander, in Heidelberg, Germany on May 18, 1957. They were married for more than 50 years, until her death on Dec. 7, 2007.
In 1958 Dr. Houg was accepted into the School of Dentistry’s Orthodontics program. He taught as a clinical assistant and professor in the department from 1961 to 1972 and had his practice in the Northgate area until his retirement in 1996. He served as president of the Northern Section of Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontics, as well as the UW Orthodontic Alumni Association. He was on the boards of Lutheran Memorial Church, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, the Elua Hawaii Condominium Association, and Inglewood Golf Club, where he was elected president in 1972. He was an active member of Northlake Lutheran Church and volunteered with Hopelink. In his retirement, he enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with family and friends.
Dr. Houg is survived by his son, Bradley (Lori); daughter Lynn (Chuck) Coffey; son-in-law Mark; grandchildren Amber (Kevin) Kirkpatrick, Alexandra and Andrew Coffey, and Clayton and Hunter Blymyer; great-grandchild Jameson Kirkpatrick; and sister Margaret Fay of Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his daughter Susan Houg Blymyer and sister Elizabeth Storie. (Legacy.com)
